A horrific incident rocked Assam’s Chirang district on Saturday evening after a 60-year-old man allegedly beheaded his wife during a domestic argument and surrendered to the police while carrying her severed head.
The accused, Britesh Hajong, killed his 50-year-old wife, Baijayanti Hajong, at their residence in the North Ballamguri area of Bijni town. According to Chirang Superintendent of Police Akshat Garg, Britesh walked straight to the nearby police patrolling point holding the severed head after committing the crime.
“He has been arrested and is being interrogated. The exact motive behind the murder is still under investigation,” Garg said. The body was sent for postmortem examination while police began recording statements from eyewitnesses, including the couple’s two daughters.
Family members revealed that Britesh had longstanding anger issues and had been physically abusive towards his wife for years. On Saturday, a regular argument reportedly escalated, leading Britesh to grab a machete and behead Baijayanti in front of their daughters.
After the brutal act, Britesh calmly left the scene, shocking neighbors and family alike. The police have recovered the murder weapon and sent it for forensic analysis to strengthen the case.
A formal case has been registered under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with other applicable sections. Authorities are also planning to involve psychological experts in the investigation, given the sheer brutality of the crime.
